The Lyndhurst Investment Philosophy
The recent recognition of Lyndhurst as Highly Commended for Investment Adviser of the Year at the Investment Life & Pensions Moneyfacts Awards 2026 provided an opportunity to revisit the principles that underpin our approach.
While markets evolve and investment solutions develop over time, the core beliefs that guide our decision-making remain consistent. The philosophy outlined below continues to shape how we construct portfolios, assess risk and seek to deliver positive long-term outcomes for our clients.
A long-term approach with a focus on risk management
Our Lyndhurst investment philosophy continues to be underpinned by our key investment pillars. We combine a long-term investing approach with a commitment to erring on the side of caution.
This means we are prepared to prioritise resilience during more challenging market conditions, rather than simply maximising participation during rising markets. Ultimately, our objective is to provide clients with a smoother investment journey and greater protection of capital during periods of market volatility and drawdowns.
We believe that successful investing is not simply about maximising returns during favourable conditions. It is equally important to help clients preserve capital and remain invested through more difficult market environments.
Combining research and experience
We leverage both qualitative and quantitative research to construct our client portfolios. On the quantitative side, we utilise screening tools alongside internal and external analysis platforms to evaluate not only individual investments, but also how they interact with one another in different market conditions.
This is complemented by extensive qualitative research. We hold more than 200 meetings with fund managers every year, allowing us to challenge assumptions, assess conviction and gain a deeper understanding of both existing investments and potential opportunities. These relationships provide valuable insight into how managers think, invest and respond to changing market conditions.
They also provide access to additional research resources, portfolio analysis tools and investment opportunities that help strengthen our due diligence process and support our ongoing investment oversight.
Diversification beyond traditional asset allocation
A further key pillar of our investment philosophy is diversification. This begins with our risk-rated asset allocation framework, provided by Dynamic Planner, through which we construct portfolios that blend a range of asset classes, including alternatives, geographical regions, investment strategies and investment styles.
We utilise both active and passive investment instruments while incorporating growth, value and momentum characteristics across portfolios. Our aim is to create multiple potential drivers of return while enhancing portfolio resilience.
As different parts of a portfolio will perform differently under varying market conditions, stronger performance in one area can help offset weaker returns elsewhere and support long-term capital preservation.
A core and satellite approach
When selecting investments, we employ a core and satellite approach. A larger proportion of the portfolio is allocated to lower-risk core holdings, which provide stability and broader market exposure. These are complemented by smaller allocations to satellite holdings that provide exposure to carefully selected opportunities where we hold stronger investment convictions and see the potential for differentiated returns.
This structure enables us to capture a wider range of investment opportunities while maintaining a sensible balance between risk and return.
Consistency of philosophy
While investment markets and economic conditions will continue to evolve, the principles that underpin our approach remain unchanged.
By combining long-term thinking, disciplined research, diversification and careful risk management, we aim to help clients navigate a wide range of market environments with confidence.
While markets and investment fashions will continue to change, our philosophy remains consistent: disciplined decision-making, rigorous research, thoughtful diversification and a long-term perspective designed to help clients invest with confidence.
