This week is #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek and the theme is “Connecting With Nature”, a subject close to my heart.
Indeed, yesterday I was planting some lavender plants in our front garden when a male blackbird (lovely orange beak) perched next to me in the hope that I would dig up some worms. He was amazingly tame and followed me around as I dug successive holes and seemed to enjoy any pickings that were on offer. At the end of my labours I sat enjoying a cold drink, listening to the chorus of bird songs and feeling incredibly relaxed and connected with nature.
The last year has been a difficult time and having conversations about mental health and the things in our daily life that can affect it is something we are very supportive of at Lyndhurst. Connecting with nature is a marvellous theme and by growing awareness of the importance of nature to good mental health we can also work to ensure that everyone can share in it.
Last year, as most of our team were working from home, we provide them with access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), an online and telephone service that can be used to help them deal with the multitude of issues that can affect us all in our daily lives. But connecting with nature is also a way of doing our bit to help combat the climate crisis, we have funded the planting of seven thousand willow trees in the Lake District to offset the carbon footprint of our team though a local Not for Profit organisation https://www.mycarbonplan.org/post/willow-continuing-to-grow-through-the-summer
